Delta Dental of Minnesota Supports First Ever Tu Salud Latino Health Fair in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (October 27, 2023) – Delta Dental of Minnesota is partnering with Telemundo Minnesota, government entities, and other health and wellness organizations to bring the first ever Tu Salud Latino Health Fair to Minneapolis on Saturday October 28, 2023. The health fair is free to the public and will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bancroft Elementary School in South Minneapolis (3829 13th Av. S.).

The first annual Tu Salud Health Fair aims to connect Latinos to much needed health care by providing free screenings, facilitating access to health care providers, and distributing critical health & wellness information via informational booths, speakers, and a discussion panel. Unfortunately, Minnesota’s Latino population can face disparities when it comes to oral and overall health. The Department of Health cites that “[u]ntreated or treated tooth decay … among Minnesota third graders enrolled in public schools are … 1.4 times more likely among Hispanic third graders than white, non-Hispanic third-graders.”

As part of the Tu Salud Health Fair, Delta Dental of Minnesota will host a booth and provide information to attendees on the importance of oral health as it relates to overall health. Optimal oral health starting in childhood and continuing in adulthood has been associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other negative health outcomes.

In addition, at 11 a.m. Dr. Eileen Crespo, Vice President of Medical Services for Delta Dental of Minnesota, will give a presentation on the relationship between diabetes and oral health. According to the National Institutes of Health “[p]eople with diabetes have a higher chance of having periodontal (gum) disease, an infection of the gum and bone that hold the teeth in place,” among other considerations. The State notes that, as of 2021, 7.9% of adult Minnesotans were living with Diabetes.

“Delta Dental of Minnesota is excited to work with community partners to raise awareness about the importance of oral and overall health to members of our community,” said Dr. Crespo. “We are grateful for this opportunity to be part of the first ever Tu Salud Health Fair.”
