Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation


Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation is designed to support Delta Dental of Minnesota’s mission of improving the health through oral health of the people in Minnesota and advancing the science and art of oral health in Minnesota. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation was formed out of the proceeds of the 2009 sale of our dental benefit management company.

In 2014, Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation awarded 31 grants totaling $3,060,250. The invite-only applicants support the causes to help address access in Minnesota through preventive and educational services, workforce strategies and by optimizing the capacity of the safety net oral health system to help the underserved population in Minnesota. Highlights include:
  • Medical/Dental Integration: Minnesota Statewide. $1.8M awarded over three years to seven nonprofit community dental programs to integrate dental and medical care, including:
    •     Just Kids Dental, Two Harbors
    •     Lake Superior Community Health Center, Duluth
    •     Open Door Health Center, Mankato
  • Minnesota Department of Health: Minnesota Oral Health Statistics System, Minnesota  Statewide. $150,000 for a new one-stop source for oral health data.
  • National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: Minnesota Statewide. $300,000 over three years to create a Minnesota Oral Health Zone to address the oral health needs of Minnesota’s children.

Children’s Dental Services

Delta Dental of Minnesota Community Benefits is a proud supporter of Children’s Dental Services (CDS). Children’s Dental Services is an independent, non-profit organization established in 1919. CDS’ mission continues to be “dedicated to improving the oral health of children from families with low incomes by providing accessible treatment and education to our diverse community.”
Since 2000, Delta Dental of Minnesota Community Benefits has provided over $1.4 million in support to CDS projects and programs.  Sarah Wovcha, Executive Director of CDS, stated, “Delta Dental of Minnesota’s funding directly expands care to CDS’ most vulnerable patients across an array of service settings. Delta Dental of Minnesota’s support of CDS has been the most extensive and impactful of any foundation in CDS’ 96 year history.”
Delta Dental of Minnesota Community Affairs provides support for CDS’ Community-Based Health Fairs Program. The Community-Based Health Fairs Program provides targeted and translated oral health information to at-risk communities during community fairs and gatherings. The program reaches over 100,000 children and families across Minnesota annually. CDS, with support from Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation opened the Dr. John Williams Children’s Dental Services Special Needs Clinic in Northeast Minneapolis. The clinic targets 5,000 children annually with behavioral and physical needs. CDS also offers a screening, referral and treatment program that serves over 16,000 low income children per year and participates in the statewide Smiles@School Sealant Initiative. CDS is the only community dental services organization in Minnesota dedicated exclusively to providing oral health outreach, education, preventive, restorative, emergency and hospital treatment to children and pregnant women.
