Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation is designed to support Delta Dental of Minnesota’s mission of improving the health through oral health of the people in Minnesota and advancing the science and art of oral health in Minnesota. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation was formed out of the proceeds of the 2009 sale of our dental benefit management company.

In 2014, Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation awarded 31 grants totaling $3,060,250. The invite-only applicants support the causes to help address access in Minnesota through preventive and educational services, workforce strategies and by optimizing the capacity of the safety net oral health system to help the underserved population in Minnesota. Highlights include:
  • Medical/Dental Integration: Minnesota Statewide. $1.8M awarded over three years to seven nonprofit community dental programs to integrate dental and medical care, including:
    •     Just Kids Dental, Two Harbors
    •     Lake Superior Community Health Center, Duluth
    •     Open Door Health Center, Mankato
  • Minnesota Department of Health: Minnesota Oral Health Statistics System, Minnesota  Statewide. $150,000 for a new one-stop source for oral health data.
  • National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: Minnesota Statewide. $300,000 over three years to create a Minnesota Oral Health Zone to address the oral health needs of Minnesota’s children.

Hammer Residences

Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation is a proud supporter of Hammer Residences. Hammer Residences is a not-for-profit organization that offers individuals with disabilities the opportunity to thrive in a school and home setting. Hammer Residences provides a range of services to their community of over 1,400 individuals that includes wellness, health care, case management, support planning and family education services. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation awarded $25,000 to Hammer Residences to support their program “Improved Dental Care for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities”. The goal for the project is to implement an innovative and focused oral health program to address the increasing dental needs for their residents living in the group homes and apartments. Hammer Residences staff provides residents with oral health tools, including electric toothbrushes that are linked to an application on an iPad that measures how long they are brushing, power flossers and anti-cavity rinses.  They also provide education along with oral health assessments. Hammer Residences has embraced the importance of good oral health, so much that their theme for 2016 is the “Year of the Smile” Since 1923 Hammer Residences has helped thousands of people live their best lives possible by remaining true to their founding vision and mission: to be a community of people who respect an individual’s abilities, whose collective spirit makes dreams come true and whose innovations continue to lead the way. Hammer Residences currently serves a total of 1,426 individuals with disabilities: 275 individuals in their 46 group homes and apartment programs throughout the Twin Cities metro, and another 1,151 individuals through their customized support services.
