Delta Dental of Minnesota is one of the largest providers of dental benefits in the Upper Midwest, serving 8,000 Minnesota-based purchasing groups and 3.8 million members nationwide. The company was founded in 1969 and is an independent, non-profit health service plan corporation. Delta Dental is a licensee of Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA), the largest dental benefit system in the United States. As a non-profit, our mission is to help ensure access to affordable dental care.

Products and Services
Our products are designed to cover the needs of employer groups of all sizes. Delta Dental provides group dental benefits on a fully insured or administrative services only basis; indemnity or PPO; and employer-paid or voluntary (employee-paid). We also offer dental benefit plans for individuals who are self-employed, retired or not covered under a group dental plan.

Delta Dental members have easy access to network dentists. Delta Dental PPOSM is our national PPO network with more than 74,000 participating dentists. Delta Dental Premier® is the largest dental network in the country with more than 134,000 participating dentists. In Minnesota, Delta Dental PPO  has more than 1,500 participating dentists, while Delta Dental Premier has more than 2,650 participating dentists.

Clients
Clients of Delta Dental of Minnesota range from small businesses to large Fortune 500 companies and employers. Delta Dental also administers dental benefits for approximately 290,000 Minnesotans who receive public assistance. Delta Dental is an excellent match for multinational corporations offering dental benefits to stateside and overseas employees. With the 2002 launch of the Expatriate Dental Program, Delta Dental introduced the first global dental benefit program to let multi-national companies offer employees living or working overseas the same dental plan benefits as their stateside colleagues.

Performance
Our competitive edge stems from our extraordinary customer service, our numerous operating efficiencies and our data analysis systems, as well as our ability to meet the needs of those companies with international employee bases. Thanks to our strengths, Delta Dental's premium and administrative revenue increased to $972 million in 2009. For the 11th consecutive year, Delta Dental of Minnesota has an A (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best.

Service Quality
Providing top quality customer service to our members, group customers and dentists is our priority. Every day, we field about 5,240 calls—chiefly about benefits and participating dentists. Customer Service representatives undergo rigorous training to ensure fast, accurate and effective service. Customer Service calls are also monitored, and each representative is graded for quality assurance. In 2009, Delta Dental of Minnesota processed about 6.2 million claims. More than 99 percent of claims are processed within 10 business days, with a 99.9 percent financial accuracy rate.

The satisfaction of our customers is evident. Our annual survey revealed that more than 95 percent of claimants are satisfied with the quality of service provided by Delta Dental. We had more than a 98 percent group retention rate for the individually-rated market in 2009.

Analytics
Delta Dental of Minnesota has made substantial investments in developing our dental analytic capabilities. Staffed with actuaries, statisticians and experts in oral epidemiology, the dental analytics team makes Delta Dental a national innovator in delivering economic value in dental benefits administration.

The analytics team completely modernized traditional dental utilization review, from a pre-treatment review program to one that involves sophisticated statistical monitoring of individual dentist practice patterns. This process has streamlined the administrative process, saving dental clinics significant time and expense. This also ensures patients' needs are met in a faster manner, with considerably shorter wait-times and improved efficiency.

Technology
With more than 40 years of experience in the dental benefits industry, Delta Dental of Minnesota has developed an advanced processing system for the unique needs of dental benefits administration. The company's mainframe and client-server computing platform uses proprietary database management software to process over 24,450 new claims per day, checking each one against applicable contracts, eligibility files and fee schedules. In 1998, Delta Dental formed an affiliate corporation in Cork, Ireland, to help build and maintain information systems that would allow Delta Dental to effectively process this large number of claims. In September 1999, Delta Dental opened a second affiliate facility in Claremorris, Ireland, which utilizes an internet-based Virtual Private Network to process the majority of Delta Dental's claims.

Delta Dental of Minnesota employees are headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota. Our Customer Service Call Centers are located in Gilbert, MN. Affiliates are located in Cork, Ireland and Claremorris, Ireland.
